Odorheiu Secuiesc is the second-largest city in Harghita County
and the de-facto capital of Seckler Country.
The Secklers ("secui" in Romanian) were the early Hungarian
migrants who followed mercenaries into the area starting in the late
10th Century. Much of their tradition cultures were
better preserved in Transilvania, than anywhere in Hungary today,
giving the Seckler people a valued place in the hearts of
Hungarians.
The ethnic Romanians, however, are not as enthusiastic.
However, according to the author Bram Stoker in his epic horror
novel "Dracula", the dark count was indeed a full-blooded Seckler,
and not Romanian at all!

proportion of Hungarians in all of Romania (based on the census of
2002).
All of the phone numbers in County Harghita
start with (266) or (366), depending on whether the service is
through the old state-run operator RomTelecom, or from one of the newer
entrants into the market in Romania.
Dailling to Seckler country,
you must remove any leading zero from the county code portion of
the phone number, so that (0266) becomes (266). Dialling a
mobile number, you do the same, dropping the zero from the (07XX) part
of the number, to make it (7XX). Both landlines and mobiles
have 6 digits following the initial county code.

Early Odorheiu Secuiesc History
Odorheiu Secuiesc
The town, as the former seat of the Udvarhely comitatus, is one of the
historical centres of the Székely Land. The first known reference to the
city was in a papal register of duties in 1333. Odorheiu Secuiesc was the
location of the first national assembly of Székelys in 1357.
A fortress was built in the town in 1492. It was rebuilt and
strengthened by John II Sigismund Zápolya in 1565, in order to control the
Székelys. The latter, allied to the Wallachian Prince (and Habsburg
partner) Michael the Brave during his campaign in Transylvania, destroyed
the fortress in 1599. It was repeatedly rebuilt and destroyed again during
history. The ruins of the structure are nowadays known as "The Székely-attacked
fortress".
Odorheiu Secuiesc and the surrounding villages were hit by significant
flooding in August 2005.
