Tārgu Neamţ (also spelt Tīrgu Neamţ, Hungarian: Németvįsįr) is a
town in Neamţ County, Romania, on the Neamţ river. It has, as of
2004, a population of about 20,000.

The Neamţ Monastery (Mānăstirea Neamţului), founded by Ştefan cel Mare and
Agapia Monastery are located west of the town.
The Neamţ Fortress (Cetatea Neamţului) was built in the 14th century by
voivode Petru I and is located on the north bank of the Neamţ river.
Mitu beckons me out back, wants to give me a tour. The yard is full of
animals: sarcastic geese, nervous turkeys, ducks, cats, skinny dogs,
gossiping pigeons, and dozens of hens.
A huge wooden barrel squats near a fence, stained purple from grapes.
It looks like a giant plum. An ancient bathtub sits nearby, encrusted with
grey cement. In a small outhouse, Mitu proudly shows me a big wicker
basket full of big brown eggs.
Anna makes a superb lunch of
deep-fried
sheep's cheese, fried eggs,
mămăligă corn
porridge, succulent home-grown tomatoes, spicy pickles and crusty bread.
She serves it on their terrace, under a canopy of vines.
The sun dapples our plates as we eat. Birdsong echoes through high
trees all around. It's rural bliss, like sitting in the
Garden of Eden. Mitu pours big glasses of
purple wine, boasting how he had a good vintage last year.

Early Tārgu Neamţ History
The Fortress in Tārgu Neamţ
Originally a market town, hence its name (in Romanian "tārg" = market), it
had an important role in the Moldavian culture. It was first mentioned in
a late-14th century document, the Novgorod Chronicle.
The name neamţ is derived from the Slavic word nemeti meaning "mute".
In many Slavic languages, nemeti also means "German", as Germans could not
understand Slavic speakers when the cultures first met. Whether Tārgu
Neamţ was or was not a Teutonic settlement is still under dispute.
