County Călăraşi

County Călăraşi
In Muntenia

Cowboy Călăraşi

Much like the cowboys of the Camargue, Călăraşi means "the cowboys" in Romanian, who roam the not entirely dissimilar lowlands and river plains of far southern Romania.

The county features the two main towns of Călăraşi and Olteniţa, both on the Danube, and three other smaller towns, Budeşti, Fundulea and Lehliu-Gară.  There are also 48 communes in the county.

Călăraşi, the capital of Călăraşi County is situated in south-east of Romania, in Wallachia, on the bank of Borcea branch of the Danube, at about 12 kilometres from the Bulgarian border and 125 kilometres from Bucharest.

The city is an industrial centre for lumber and paper, food processing, glass manufacturing, textiles, medical equipment production and heavy industry branches.

Geography

The entire area is the South part of the Bărăgan Plain, crossed by small rivers with deep valleys.  On the South and East side there is the valley of the Danube which, on the East side, splits in a number of branches, forming large islands, currently assonated.  On the West side, the rivers Argeş and Dāmboviţa form a wide valley before flowing into the Danube.
With an area of 5,088 km², County Călăraşi is neighboured by Constanţa County in the east, counties Ilfov and Giurgiu to the west, Ialomiţa to the north, and by Bulgaria across the Danube to the south (provinces Silistra and Ruse).

Population

In 2002, County Călăraşi had a population of 324,617 and the population density was 64/km², being 95% Romanian and the rest Rroma and others.

Economy

Agriculture is the main occupation in the county, generating about 3% of the entire country's agricultural output.  In Călăraşi there is a big metallurgical complex, similar to the one in Galaţi, and other industries in the county include food production, textiles, and construction materials.

Why Not Stop Here?

The site of a prehistoric village, Călăraşi was created by Wallachian Princes as a station on the route to Istanbul, operated by horseback riders (the călăraşi).

It expanded into a small town, and in 1834 became the surrounding county's capital. Population in 1900 was 11,024, and in 2003, 71,042.
