County Dolj is bordered by fellow Oltenian counties Olt to the east,
Mehedinţi in the west, and counties Gorj and Vālcea to the north.
Across the Danube river to the south lies Bulgaria, and Vidin Province,
Montana Province and Vratsa Province.
This county has a total area of 7, 414 km², and the entire area is
flat, a low almost imperceptively sloping plain with the Danube on the
South forming a wide valley, and crossed by the Jiu River in the middle.
Also other small rivers flow, each one forming into it's own small shallow
valley. There are some lakes across the county and many ponds and
channels leading down to the Danube.
Demographics
In 2002, it had a population of 734, 231 and the population density
was 99/km². Over 96% of the population are Romanians, with the biggest
minority being the Rromas (Gypsies) with 3% and Serbians and Bulgarians
almost 1%.
Economy
The county is mainly an agricultural one with land ideal for growing
Cereals, vegetables and wines. The industry is manly located in the city
of Craiova, the biggest city in South-Western Romania and de facto capital
of Oltenia.
Craiova is quite well industrialised, with the predominant industries
in the county being the automotive industry and that of heavy electrical
and transport equipment. Electroputere Craiova is one of the largest
electrical component factories in Romanian.
Other industries include the Aeronautics industry, Chemical industry,
Food and beverages industry, Textile industry, and a Mechanical components
industry. The county has two ports on the Danube at both Bechet and
Calafat.
