County Sălaj is bordered by fellow Transilvania
region county Cluj to the south and east, and by Bihor
County to the west, Maramureş County and Satu Mare County to the north.
This county has a total area of 3,864 km˛, lying in
the area between the Apuseni Mountains and the Eastern Carpathians known
as the Someş River Platform. The county is crossed by the Someş River.
Some of the smaller rivers are Crasna, Barcău, Almaş, Agrij and the Sălaj
river, after which the county is named.
Demographics
In 2002, it had a population of 248,015 and the
population density was 64/km˛, of which most are Romanian (75%) and a
Hungarian population of 23.07%.
Economy
The predominant industries in the county include
the normal food, textiles, and machine component manufacturing, along with
appreciable forestry, furniture and papermaking industries.
Towns
The only city in Sălaj is Zalău,
complemented by four smaller towns in the county,
Cehu Silvaniei, Jibou, Sarmasag, and Şimleu Silvaniei.
There are 56 communes, including Crasna, Poiana Blenchii, and Treznea.
