County Vâlcea is bordered by the Muntenia
region and County Argeş to the east, and by fellow
Oltenian region counties Olt and Dolj to the south, and County Gorj to the
west. To the north-west and north are the Transilvanian region
counties of Hunedoara, Alba, and Sibiu.
5,765 km˛ is the total surface area of County Vâlcea,
with the north side delineated by the Southern Carpathian mountains. The
eastern sub-group of these mountains are the Făgăraş Mountains, with
heights over 2200 metres, and on the western end, the Lotru Mountains
going over 2000m. These two sub-groups are separated by the Olt River
valley, which has long provided the most accessible passage between
Transylvania and Wallachia.
Along the Olt River Valley there are smaller groups of mountains, the
most spectacular being the Cozia Mountains. Towards the South, the
heights decrease, passing through the sub-Carpathian hills to a high plain
in the western of the Romanian Plain. The main river is the Olt River
crossing the county from North to South. Its main tributaries are the
Lotru River in the North and the Olteţ River in the South.
Demographics
In 2002, it had a population of 413,247 and the population density was
72/km˛, of which 98% are Romanian, with a small minority of Rromas and
others.
Economy
The industrial hum of Râmnicu Vâlcea contrasts sharply with the
surrounding agrarian farmland.
The predominant industries in the county include chemicals, food and
beverages, textiles, mechanical components, construction materials and
wood and furniture making.
In the West of the county coal and salt are extracted.
The area in the centre of the county is well suited for fruit
orchards, wines and raising cattle. The South is better suited for
growing cereals and vegetables.
