The Danube Delta
One of the most exciting birding experiences in Europe, the
lush expanses of the Danube Delta host over 300 bird species with 1,100
varieties of plants and 45 species of freshwater fish in its numerous
lakes and marshes.
With large birds featuring primarily pelican, swan, egret,
eagle, heron, and goose, the delta is incredibly rich in breeding birds.
The Danube Delta comprises a vast complex of reed beds, willow forest, and
wetland, crossed by an intricate pattern of access channels.
With UNESCO World Heritage site status since 1996, the
delta biosphere reservation has registered 27 cohesive ecosystems, from
shore margins to inland forests.
The seasons and cycles of wet and dry periods across the
Danube Delta affect the types and amounts of food sources available to
each species and a rotating, self-regulating system favouring some one
year and others the next.
Population densities of nesting species in the Delta are
significantly higher than in similar areas outside of the Delta, with
permanent residents making a few adaptations to the higher populations and
food abundance, as well as with the annual migratory influxes.
Finding Your Own Nest
As the largest town in the region, Tulcea is a great base
for all of the delta, being at the entrance to the Delta Danube prime
birdwatching zone.
A great spot to start your birding experience is at the
Danube Delta Visitor's Centre in Tulcea. From Tulcea are several ferry
services into the Delta, going down one of the three major arms of the
river as it fans out to the Black Sea.

Smaller Towns such as Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe
also provide reasonable accommodation and good access to key
birdwatching areas.
