26 Oct 06: Romania and Bulgaria have deplored plans to limit their workers'
access to the labour markets of Britain and Ireland when they join the
EU.
Romania's prime minister described the British decision as
"unfortunate". He said the UK government had caved in to populist demands from the
conservative opposition. Bulgaria said it was considering reciprocal measures for citizens
from Britain, Ireland and other EU countries that closed their labour
markets.
Labour restrictions are decided by each EU government and can be

The prolific
Nine O'Clock offers
original opinion and editorial content aimed at the somewhat
English-speaking market in Bucharest. At Splaiul Independentei
just inside Bucharest's Sector 6, Nine O'Clock's refreshingly
unguarded reporting underscores the earnest aims of it's staff.
Not as polished as the major dailies by any means with the occasional
gaff, Nine gives the news as it happens in a readable format with
many-times amusing use of the King's English.
Bucharest Business Week
is an American owned tabloid format newspaper with good in-depth
coverage of issues important to investors and the foreign community.
The Online HotNews
in English offers wire-service summaries of the days news in
English. The daily a very good press round-up of the major daily
papers at their
HotNews Press Review section is not to be missed, offering a
concise and even summary of the day's major issues.
The Bucharest Daily
News offers English-speaking coverage and seems to have a few
connections in government, with some good interviews and editorials.
The Diplomat,
whilst perhaps aimed more at embassy and consular staff, families and
foreign workers in Romania, offers some well-considered insights and
perspectives into Romanian government and news. With a nicely
rounded news review section, The Diplomat highlights the important and
interesting and largely discards the rest.
MediaFax
is the established Romania wire service with a surprising number of
stories translated into English and an overall view into all section
of Romanian life.
Vivid targets English-speaking foreign nationals in Romania, with
opinion pieces and lighter fare describing Bucharest, it's delights
and it's ails.
