Is it a county or a special district? It used
to be alot larger before 1972, and is today the smallest county in
Romania, dwarfed by the might of Bucharest in the southern half of the
county.
County Ilfov has eight towns, from the suburban
Bucharest satellites of Otopeni, Voluntari, Bragadiru, and populous
Pantelimon, to slightly further afield Buftea, Chitila, Popeşti-Leordeni
and Măgurele. There are also 31 communes, listed below.

County Ilfov used to be largely rural, but after the
1989 revolution, many of the county's villages and communes developed into
high-income commuter towns, which act like suburbs or satellites of
Bucharest.
The development and gentrification of the county is
continuing, with many towns in Ilfov, such as Otopeni, having higher some
of the highest GDP per capita levels in the country.
The county has a large surface covered with forests
and also due to its lakes, it is a frequent week-end and holiday
destinations for the inhabitants of Bucharest.
